Recently there was a lot of buzz about “The Surgical Strike in Uri” that happened in 2016. Also a movie released last week starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami gautam depicting the story of the surgical strike.
What was 2016 Uri Attack?
So what was the 2016 Uri Attack? On 18 September 2016 , an attack by four heavily armed militants, near the town of Uri in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir took place. It was reported as “the deadliest attack on security forces in Kashmir in two decades”. And Nearly 10 days after the attack that claimed 18 jawans, India carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists.
Can we go to Uri ?
Okay so now not talking about the details of the Surgical Strike but about Uri as a travel destination. Yes, you can travel to Uri and explore it but there are certain security steps too that you need to follow. I tried to communicate with a few people who went there for work related purpose and some who visited it while travelling to Jammu and Kashmir. So here is the complete detail.
Uri is small a town in the Baramula District in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. The river Jhelum flows from here. The town is very close to the Line of Control (LOC), the disputed border between India and Pakistan.
As tourism is not popular in Uri so not many people know that they can actually go there. The local people are very friendly and warm. Also you’ll spot cops moving around as it is only 3 km from Pakistan, as it is an active area with militancy.
Uri doesn’t have many tourist spots. Well, yes there is nothing much to see here except its beautiful lush green valleys. Also, you can have a visit to the Jhelum River, it’s really beautiful and serene.
How to Reach
By road, Uri is connected to Baramula and Gulmarg. Taxis (sumos) are available from Baramula.
The route to Uri is strikingly beautiful, with green valleys and mountains. Rice fields are many in the route. Small villages come in the route.
Nearest airport is Srinagar Airport. Nearest option is Srinagar in Kashmir. You can easily get regular buses from other major cities of the country.
Uri is a great city to visit in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.There is no regular flights from other major cities of the country .
No Railway station here.
Where to Stay in Uri
It’s not very difficult to find a place to stay here. There are very few hotels in Uri. You may find one nearby.
And yes, Uri mostly has temperatures below zero degree, so wear proper woollen clothes to prevent catching cold. Also, don’t go out alone at night.

Also there are drunk people and snatchers in the streets at night. And don’t go very far. Always remember that militant activity is Extremely High here.
